Over 500 alumni of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Ismail (SSI) Johor Bahru gathered at a fund-raising dinner on 17 November 2018 at Berjaya Waterfront Hotel Johor Bahru. The dinner was organised to facilitate future activities to benefit students and alumni of the high-performance-school.
YB Aminolhuda Hassan, Chairman of Islamic Affairs and Education Committee represented the Menteri Besar Johor, and En Abdullah Bin Ideris represented YB Dato' Haji Salahuddin Bin Ayub, Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Pulai constituency. Representing the Mayor of Johor Bahru was Syafini Binti Mohi, the head of the audit department.
“SSI is iconic to Johor Bahru. Its visionary set up in 1960 had enabled young Johoreans to get proper education in this city, and tonight, we saw a great number of alumni returned to Johor Bahru to honour the school. I hope SSI will continue to flourish with the recent budget allocation of more than RM60 billion for education in 2019,” said YB Aminolhuda.
“The organising committee is thrilled to receive such positive response from alumni and other parties. I hope more alumni will ‘pay it forward’ and assist us. Meanwhile, gatherings such as this bring parties closer – current students, alumni, teachers and caring corporate citizens,” said Hj Yazid Mohamed, chairman of the alumni association.
RM10,000 was collected and handed over to the school's principal, Abdul Halil Abu Bakar (third from left).
A group of alumni also showed their vocal strength and performed their favourite hits; Tormadi Jono (batch '74), Hjh Azizah Shafie (batch '68), Rohana Mohamad, Sarimah Hashim and Hassan Hamzah (batch '73) received thunderous applause from friends who sang along enthusiastically.
Popular 80’s singers, Maria Bachok and Junainah M Amin entertained the packed hall with hits such as ‘Ikutku Menyanyi’, ‘Ku Sayang Padamu’ and ‘Kasih di Hati Sayang di Mata’, with duets performed with Ahmad Jasin, who serenaded the crowd with the late Datuk Ahmad Jais' hits.
